John H. Morgan only lived in Memphis for five years, but spent two of them as mayor. Born in North Carolina, Morgan early in life moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee where he received his education and began the practice of law. Two
years later his reputation was such that he was elected mayor. He served his two year term, remained in Memphis one more year, then moved to Mississippi where he became a probate judge and once again opened a law practice.
Morgan is not to be confused with the Confederate General of the same name.
