Gene was the third of seven children of Levi and Margaret Hake. He was the only one born in Kansas on the family's trek from their home in Wisconsin to their new home in Washington state. Gene was born in Logan, Lincoln County, Kansas in September 1880 not long after the family arrived from Jefferson County Wisconsin. They didn't remain there long as the next child, Ernest, was born in Seattle in March of 1882 and by 1886 the family was living in the small town of Edison located along the beautiful Chuckanut drive which begins in the Skagit Valley and follows the coast line north to Bellingham, Washington.

Gene, like most of his brothers, worked in haybaling in the Yakima Valley. On August 21, 1914 he married Agnes Ida (Smith) Behning in North Yakima, Washington. They had no children but Agnes had three by her previous marriage to William F. Behning. Their names were Cornelia, Dorothy and Wilton.

Gene and Ida divorced and on January 10, 1934 he married Mary K. (Ogilvie) Douglas in Yakima, Washington. She was the widow of John W. Douglas with whom she had at least two children: Edna and Agnes.

After Gene's death, Mary married Rollie Samuel Skillin on June 11, 1955 in Stevenson, Skamania, Washington.
