Social Reformer. Welsh nonconformist minister and writer, friend of Benjamin Franklin (who stayed in his London house). He founded the Literary Fund in 1788 to support impoverished writers. Because of its success and reputation this became the Royal Literary Fund in 1842 and still exists.
