Hartford Courant, Hartford, CT - 19 July 1899, Wed., Pg. 2 - KICKED TO DEATH BY A HORSE. Terrible Death of a Swede in South Farms. (Special to the Courant) Middletown, July 18. There was a terrible accident Monday night in the Hubbard district, South Farms. John Johnson, a Swede, about 45 years of age, who lives on what is known as the Bottomy farm, was kicked to death by his horse. He is a blacksmith and is employed by Brainerd, Shaller & Hall quarry in Portland. On his return from his work Monday night he turned the horse out to pasture and about 8 o'clock took his lantern and went out to catch the horse and put him in the stable. Dr. J. F. Calef, the medical examiner found that he had been kicked by the horse twice, once over the heart and once over the solar plexus, either blow being sufficient to cause death. He leaves a family of small children and a babe two months old, and a wife and brother. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock and the interment will be in Washington street cemetery.
