Company D, 149th Indiana Infantry-Civil War

Samuel Baker of Spencer, Indiana, enlisted on February 15, 1865 as a private in Company D, Indiana 149th Infantry Regiment and was mustered out on 13 Jul 1865. Sources: Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana.

One Hundred and Forty-ninth Indiana Infantry. — Col., William A. Fairbanks; Lieut. Col., William D. Mull; Maj., Thomas B. Reeder. This regiment was raised in the 7th Congressional district and organized at Indianapolis in Feb., 1865. It was mustered in March 1 and left the state on the 3d, proceeding to Nashville and moving a few weeks later to Decatur, Ala. While stationed at that place, it received the surrender of the forces commanded by Gens. Roddey and Polk, together with a large quantity of arms and munitions of war. It was mustered out at Nashville, Sept. 27, 1865. The original strength was 1,025; gain by recruits, 16; total, 1,041. Loss by death, 38; desertion, 27. Samuel Baker, aged 74, born Indiana, occupation ranchman, joined the Major General Henry W. Halleck Post No. 19, GAR, of Chico in 1902. He died on March 31, 1928. Chico Record (Chico, California) 31 Mar 1928, Saturday Page 1: Samuel Baker Dies At Home. Samuel Baker, 79, a resident of Chico for the past 15 years, died at 2 o'clock this morning at his home at Fifteenth and Boucher streets. He was a member of Halleck Post No. 19, G.A.R., and of the First Baptist Church of Chico.

Mr. Baker served as a private in Company D of the 149th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Edith Baker, of Chico, and the following children:

Mrs. Emma Cheney of Chico; John Baker, Mrs. Nellie Bristol, Mrs. Fannie Bowers and Mrs. Lillie Thompson, all of Ainsworth, Neb. Nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Westfall Funeral Home, the Rev. L.G. Morony officiating. Burial will be in the G.A.R. plot of the Chico cemetery and Halleck Post will have charge of the graveside services.

Chico Record (Chico, California) 03 Apr 1928, Tuesday Page 2: Samuel Baker Funeral Services Are Conducted. Funeral services for Samuel Baker were held in the Westfall funeral home at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, the Rev. L.G. Morony of the First Baptist Church officiating.

Baker was a veteran of the Civil War and a prominent member of the Halleck Post of the G.A.R.

Interment was made in the G.A.R. plot of the Chico cemetery. The pallbearers were: George Wykle, W.J. Collins, John Millis, E.A. Whitcomb, William Miles and John Smith.

Graves of 13 Civil War veterans were marked with appropriate tombstones yesterday when W.M. Bundy, adjutant of Halleck Post No. 19, Grand Army of the Republic, his son, Fred Gwinnup, and his grandson, George Gwinnup, placed the stones in the Grand Army plot in the Chico cemetery.

Mr. Bundy, as adjutant of the Chico post, supervised the work. The stones were furnished by the federal government and were sent to Chico from Boston.

Those whose graves were marked follow: George W. Tipton, R.B. Richards, D.M. Birdseye, John M. Irwin, C.C. Maltby, Samuel Baker, John Sauber, D.D. Cornick, Hugh W. Hughes, Watis Batchelor, Henry M. Stevens, Frank Popplewell and N.W. Henderson.
