Martin McGowan
Retired fireman

Martin McGowan, 81, of 469 Delafield Ave., West Brighton, a retired city fireman, died yesterday in St. Vincent's Medical Center.

Mr. McGowen, a Staten Islander for 47 years, had served at the firehouse on Castleton Ave. in West Brighton for most of his 27 years with the Fire Department.

Following his retirement from the department, he worked for a time as a steamfitter and was a member of Local 638 of the Steamfitters Union.

He was born in County Mayo, Ireland and came to the United States in 1909, settling in Manhattan. He served in the Army during World War I.

Mr. McGowan was a member of the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Brighton.

He is survived by his wife, Nora; five sons, three daughters, and 30 grandchildren.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Harmon Funeral Home with a mass at 11 am in Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
