ONEONTA — David S. Cooper, 90, of Oneonta, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 2, 1909, in Brooklyn, the son of Samuel and Mary (Byrnes) Cooper.

He married Rachel M. Varano on July 24, 1937, in New York City. She died on Feb. 15, 1989. On Oct. 8, 1995, he married Anne M. Super, who died on July 21, 2000.

Dave was the manager of JJ Newberry's in Oneonta from 1944 to 1965. In 1966, he became involved with the city of Oneonta Urban Renewal program and served as its director up until his retirement in 1979.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church and a life member of the John F. Kennedy Council of the Knights Of Columbus. He also was a member of the Oneonta Rotary Club.

Dave is survived by his loving family, which includes his children and their spouses, Joe and Judy Cooper of Glastonbury, Conn., Martha Cooper of Charlottesville, Va., Jim and Connie Holmes of Riga, Latvia, John and Joan Cooper of McKees Rocks, Pa., Roger and Donna Cooper of Colonie and Barbara and Gary Golja of Worcester; his 11 grandchildren, Christopher Cooper, Meredith Ruppert, Matthew Cooper, Susan Kenny, Jennifer Coleman, Dana Cooper, Rachel Holmes, Rebecca Wentzel, Karen Cooper, Kelly Cooper and Rachel Golja; his six great-grandchildren, Noah and Lucy Cooper-Hauser, Mackenzie and Emma Ruppert and John and Cooper Kenny; his sister, Edith Brown of Brooklyn; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, David M. Cooper, in 1990.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call on Sunday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 2 to 5 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Greater Connecticut Chapter, Newington, Conn. 06111.
