Born in Belfast, Ireland, Robert immigrated to Canada with his family around 1870 and lived first in London township of Middlesex County, Ontario. He married Laura Ann Ford in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on August 13, 1881, and for the better part of the next 30 years they lived as prairie pioneers on the Carberry Plains of southern Manitoba, where all of their ten children were born.
At some point before 1911, Robert moved the family to Alberta, farming land in and around MacLeod, Lonebutte, and Bow River. He had at least two sons who served in France during the Great War: Morris, who was wounded at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917, and Frank, who was killed by German artillery a few weeks later at Mont-Saint-Éloi.
Robert and Laura eventually settled and spent their remaining years in Burnaby, British Columbia.
