James was born in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia to Jonathan Elliott & Mary Drane (Drain). He later moved to Alabama and became very wealthy and owned a large plantation. Both he and his son Hezekiah served in Alabama in the Creek War. He married Sarah Shumate on February 6, 1794. She was believed to have been a French Huguenot from Fauquier County, Virginia. Extensive records of the probate of James Elliott's estate can still be reviewed and studied at the Blount Co. Courthouse in Oneonta, AL.
