Born in Evanston, Illinois on October 9, 1934, Joanne was the daughter of the late John and Ezabel Sevekian Kouyomjian, and attended Northwestern University where she majored in music. She loved to play and listen to the piano. With her husband, Joseph, who co-owned and operated Skyview Star Supermarket in Latham, New York, she raised their three children in Niskayuna, New York, showing them endless love. She was a proud homemaker and enjoyed cooking great Armenian and American dishes and baking sumptuous Armenian and American desserts. Her favorite time of year was the Christmas holidays, when she adorned her home with beautiful Christmas decorations and entertained her family and friends with music, food, special prayers and love.
She is survived by her son Richard (Beth) Hartunian and daughter Patricia (Joseph) O'Keefe, together with 7 Grandchildren: Daniel (Alexandra), Matthew, Christopher and Jennifer O'Keefe; and Joseph (Megan Cheney), John and James Hartunian.
She recently celebrated the birth of her great grandchild - Charlotte Elizabeth O'Keefe.
She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved so much.
Joanne was predeceased by her husband Joseph, who died in June, 2004; and her cherished daughter Lynne Hartunian, who died in the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in December, 1988. In the years that followed Lynne's death, Joanne became a tireless advocate for victims of terrorism, and spoke everywhere in support of their cause, from the halls of Congress to high school classrooms across the Capital Region. She shared a strong bond with many victims' family members of the Pan Am 103 tragedy and will be missed by all those who knew her as a caring and compassionate friend and mentor to the group.
Joanne was especially close to her church community at St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church and her priest, Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, together with her friends in the Bible Study group.
During the last difficult months, she was comforted by caregivers to whom she and her family owe a debt of sincere gratitude.
She will be missed by many and will remain in the hearts of all those she touched in so many ways.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joanne's memory can be made to the St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church, 100 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, NY 12189.
Arrangements are by the Parker Bros. Memorial in Watervliet. Condolence book at ParkerBrosMemorial.com.
