Chico Daily Record, Thursday Morning, February 1, 1900, pg 4 col 3: Death of John Ensign. Last evening, January 31st, at 7 o'clock, John Ensign quietly breathed his last, at his home on the Hamilton road near the railroad. The deceased was a member of the G.A.R. and was born April 4, 1817, in Washington county, New York, being at his death nearly 83 years of age. He moved to Chico from Northfield, Minn., in Oct. 1898. He leaves a wife, two sons, W.E. and H.U. Ensign, and a daughter, Mrs. Alice Kellom, all residents of Chico, also a son, E.A. Ensign, who resides at Attica, N.Y., also a son, J.H. Ensign, at Cottonwood, Minn. The time of the funeral has not been set.

Chico Daily Record, Saturday Morning, February 3, 1900, pg 4 col 1: Funeral of John Ensign. Though he had been a resident of Chico but a comparatively short time previous to his death, the funeral of John Ensign called out a large number of friends and acquaintances yesterday afternoon. The services were held at the family residence, and were conducted by Rev. M. Slaughter.
Having been a member of the G.A.R. at the time of his death, the local Post, under command of J. McC. Stilson, acted as escort and the G.A.R. conducted the services at the grave. A firing squad was present under command of Quarter Master Sergeant Thomasson. The interment was in the GAR cemetery lot by request of the deceased.
The pall bearers were W.T. McClard, C.H. Hubbard, W.H. Waddams, A.C. Tabor, William Mason and Dr. Whistler.
During the civil war, deceased was a member of the 8th Wisconsin battery, and served until he was retired on account of disability.
