Disaster Memorial. It was the third deadliest disaster in New Zealand's history. On November 28, 1979, at 12:50PM, Air New Zealand Flight 901 crashed into Mount Erebus during a routine sightseeing tour over McMurdo Sound. The crash killed all 257 passengers and crew on board instantly. The memorial cross is located not far from the crash site and replaces an original wooden cross that had since eroded from weather.
