North Carolina Governor. Educated at the Louisburg Academy, graduating from the University of North Carolina. With degrees in 1826 and 1832, he went on to study law, but never practiced. He was appointed a position as a court clerk in 1840 and was a member of the North Carolina Senate (1850-61). In 1861, when Governor John W. Ellis died in office, he was elected as a Democrat was the 36th Governor of North Carolina, serving until 1862. While in office, the Civil War had started, volunteers were armed and provisions were raised for the war effort. As Governor, he was unable to maneuver in the new political world for his state ushered in by the Civil War. After leaving the governorship, he served again in the North Carolina Senate (1866-67). He then lived in retirement until his death at age 66.
