John married Cynthia Hersey, the daughter of Jedidiah and Ann (Erb), in New Brunswick prior Dec 1, 1845 when he immigrated to the United States. He later filed his petition for U. S. citizenship in 1851. A ship's carpenter or Shipwright, he worked in the ship yards at East Boston, but by 1880 was listed as a Saloon Keeper. Fraternally he was a member of the Mt. Tabor Masonic Lodge in East Boston, having been initiated in 1855.

There were four children born to the marriage of John and Cynthia, including John H. on Jun 2, 1844; Jedediah ca. 1847; Charles ca. 1850; and Ella born ca. 1858.
