Politician. He was a Dutch politician who held several positions including the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. Loudon studied Law at Leiden University. Graduation meant he was able to use the title Mr., meaning Meester in de Rechten (Master of Laws). After his studies, he became Lawyer and Attorney in Batavia, which is now Jakarta. After returning to the Netherlands, he became Minister of Colonial Affairs as a Liberal in Cabinet-Van Zuylen van Nijevelt-Van Heemstra from 1861 to 1862. After the fall of this Cabinet, Laudon was asked to form a new Cabinet, but refused. He instead became the King's Commissioner in South Holland, serving from 1862 to 1871. In 1872, he was named Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. During his reign as Governor-General, the Aceh War start in 1873. His reputation declined after several failed punitive expeditions. In 1874, Laudon resigned and returned to the Netherlands, where he was raised to nobility in 1884. This meant he was able to use the title Jhr., short for Jonkheer, an honorific title for Dutch nobility similar to Squire in English.
