JACKSONVILLE — Janet O. Smith, 70, of Jacksonville, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at her granddaughter's residence in Trimble. Born Oct. 18, 1943, in Perry County, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Mildred McConaha Giffin.
She retired from Appalachian Visiting Nurses, where she was a nurse's aide. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses/Athens Congregation and enjoyed crocheting and mushroom hunting.
She is survived by a son, Rob (Angie) Smith of Glouster; a daughter, Kim Smith-Leach of Jacksonville; eight grandchildren, Jason, Jadie, Crystal, Warren, Derek and Aaron Smith, Jewell Leon, and a special granddaughter, Robin "Nicky" (Thomas) Smith; a great-grandson, Damon Smith, whom she raised, and several other great-grandchildren; and a sister, Freda Degarmore of Corning.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Dave and Mark Smith; three sisters, Dorothy Murphy, Donna Dixon and Carolyn Derenburger; and two brothers, Kenny and Gene Giffin.
Janet's wishes were to be cremated, and there will be no services observed. Arrangements are being handled by Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville. A comforting message may be sent to the family at www.morrisonfc.com.
