On 13 July 1937, he had a heart attack, fell off a catwalk, and drowned in a huge vat of beer at Anheuser-Busch Brewery. It was a horrible tragedy at the time, though there have been jokes in more recent generations about "the guy who drowned in beer". He was originally buried on 19 July 1937 at Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, but he was later reburied on 21 March 1940 at Mountain View Cemetery.
