Son of Captain James Boyd I and Louisa Johanna Graham

Captain James Boyd 1669 and his brother Captain Charles Boyd 1674 were in Sir Charles Graham's Regiment of Foot in the Scots Dutch Brigade. (The Scots Peerage V: 174). I have not found a record of 3 brothers. Now then in order for James 1669 and Charles 1674 to have been in Sir Charles Graham's Regiment of Foot in the Scots Dutch Brigade then they had to join before 4 November 1695 as Sir Charles Graham was dismissed from service.

"After the surrender of Namur King William III arrested Boufflers because the garrisons of Dixmuiden and Deynse had not been released as promised by Louis XIV. This affected that these garrisons were indeed released by the French and arrived at Gent in about October 1695. Ellenberger and also Colonel Graham were arrested on grounds of bribery or neglect of duty. At Gent a Court Martial was held from 19 October till 4 November 1695. It convicted Ellenberger to death and dismissed Graham from the service.

James returned home on leave (or wounded) after The Battle of Ekeren, which took place on 30 June 1703 and died there in c1704.

"As the story goes, 3 Boyd brothers came to America with the Dutch Brigade. James, William, and John about 1720, but it is said William left the ship at Block Island, before its arrival at Boston". This story is fabricated as there is no mention in the peerage of a brother William and James died in 1704 and no record for John. Some people also confuse this story with the sons of James Boyd 1669, also fabricated. My personal opinion is none of it is true.

Captain James Boyd and Louisa Graham were married 25 April 1695 in Edinburgh, Scotland (Midlothian Parish Records). James and Louisa did not emigrate to America so only if the boys birth dates were 1695, 1697, and 1699 would it even be feasible.

Now what I do know which is very little is William became a Ship Captain and acquired his own ship the "Prince Frederick". During King George's war he was hired by the Crown as a Privateer. "Privateers were ships that were sent out to inflict damage on the enemy's commerce during King George's War, 1740-1748." See "Rhode Island in the Colonial Wars" by Howard M. Chapin, 1918. Book lists Captain William Boyd "Master of the Privateer Prince Frederick in 1743" Various Irish port records place William from Dungannon. I have one record which places him in Boston Harbor August 10-18, 1743. No other record I have acquired places him in Colonial America.
