EDWARD J. DORNAUS
(1914 - 2007)

Edward J. Dornaus, age 93, of 3114 Lindbergh Drive, Manitowoc, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at his residence.

Edward was born April 6, 1914, in Manitowoc, son of the late Frank and Rosalia (Kolhbeck) Dornaus. He was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School. On May 1, 1943, he married (Peggy) Margaret Wishart in De Pere. She preceded him in death on Nov. 18, 1992.

Edward was employed as a machinist and shop supervisor at Kaufman Manufacturing of Manitowoc for many years. He especially enjoyed company parties after his retirement, where he became the oldest retiree of Kaufman's. Edward was a charter member of St. Paul's Parish.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his brothers and nephews and was a member of several conservation groups. In his later years, he joined the Manitowoc Elks Lodge #687 and became an avid golfer, enjoying league play and charity events.

Edward was a devoted supporter of Holy Family Memorial Hospital, where his sister Anna worked for many years, and where he and his wife received excellent medical care.

Edward loved to play cards — Canasta with his in-laws, Sheepshead with his brothers and extended family, partnering his wife in Bridge, a weekly game with the gents, or a daily Cribbage game with Norman Johnson (Edward was ahead).

Edward will be missed by his daughter Virginia (Tom) Day, Plymouth, MN; grandson Matthew Day, St. Paul, MN; sister-in-law Beatrice (Jim) Dornaus Lau, Manitowoc; nieces, nephews and his many friends. He was preceded in death by his sisters: Anna Jackl (Sister Martin Tours), Theresa Ryder and Rosemary Ording; and his brothers: Harold Jackl, Reinhart and Robert.

Special thanks to his sister-in-law Beatie Dornaus Lau, to Jim Lau, and to Norman and Patricia Johnson, whose combined devotion enabled him to continue living in his home until the end.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Monsignor James Vanden Hogen, with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum. The family will greet relatives and friends from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial to Roncalli High School or Holy Family Memorial Hospital in his name will be appreciated.

The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

After his retirement from Kaufman, Edward took on the care of his wife and mother-in-law, learning cooking and housekeeping after his many years as breadwinner for his family. His enthusiasm and can-do spirit will be missed by all of us who knew him and loved him.
