LDS-related texts, biographies, and church histories suggest that Alden Burdick Jr. was born 6 Dec 1834 at Kirtland, Ohio.

Alden's parents Alden Sr. and Jerusha Burdick were early converts to Joseph Smith, and appear to have had friendships with Joseph and Emma Smith. Alden Jr. was raised within the religion--he was born at Kirtland, Ohio, and was present at Nauvoo, Illinois and Winter Quarters, Nebraska. Alden Sr. died from "fever" on 20 Aug 1845, probably at La Harpe, Hancock County, Illinois (Nauvoo Neighbor newspaper, 3 Sep 1845, p. 3).

Joseph F. Smith (the 6th LDS church president and nephew of Joseph Smith) gave an interview in 1915 detailing childhood adventures that he and Alden Jr. experienced around 1846 at Winter Quarters (Desert News, 13 Feb 1937, p. 35). Alden Jr. migrated with his widowed mother and siblings to Utah before heading west to take part in the California gold rush during his mid-teen years, sometime in the early 1850s.

An 1855 letter from Jerusha Burdick to Brigham Young exists wherein she asks the church president for advice regarding one of her sons refusing to have his marriage sealed within the LDS faith. It is possible that the letter refers to Columbus (married 1851), Lutellus (married 1854), or Alden (probably married c. 1855).

Alden married Alzina Shepard around 1855, although no record of the marriage appears to exist. Their first child Alzina Cenora Burdick was born 12 Nov 1855 in Utah (according to her headstone and 1900 Census), although the exact location is unknown.

Utah territorial military records show Alden as mustered into "The Nauvoo Legion" as a private at Kaysville, Farmington, Davis County, Utah on 21 Apr 1857.

Alden owned a large plot of ranch land in Bishop California beginning in the mid-1860s. His wife Alzina passed away either during or shortly after the birth of their child William, probably about Jan 1870. Alden buried Alzina on a high patch of land on the ranch property. Others in the community began burying their dead in the same area, which eventually became Bishop's "Pioneer" / West Line Street Cemetery.

Alden's death certificate shows date of death as 22 Aug 1905, with cause of death as "Fatty degeneration of the heart." Buried 25 Aug 1905 at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, California.

Note on birth date: Like many of his era, there are conflicting accounts on Alden's birth date--although the majority of records point to the year 1834. 1855 Utah Marriage Records lists birth year as 1834. 1870 Census suggests birth year of 1836; 1880 Census suggests birth year of 1840. Death certificate shows date of birth as 17 Jan 1840 in Ohio (although it's possible that this was a guess by the informant, his daughter Phoebe Burdick Tidwell). "Among the Remnant Who Lingered" by Beth Radmall Oslen (a genealogical text on the Burdick family) suggests Alden's birth date was 6 Dec 1834.
