Mary Jane was born December 15, 1926 in Reading, Pennsylvania, daughter of Dr. Raymond J. and Grace J. Staudy Heckman. Yes, she "did it her way" and celebrated her Earthly birthday with us, then celebrated her Heavenly birthday all in the same day!
Mary Jane graduated from Allentown High School in 1944 and graduated from Gettysburg College in 1948. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Eta Sigma Phi, Delta Phi Alpha Honor Fraternities, and had extra credits at Kutztown University. Mrs. Shumberger taught German, Latin and English at Mohnton High School; History and English at East Pennsboro (Enola); German at Elizabethtown High School, Elizabethtown College, and at Whitehall High School.
She retired after 34 years of teaching and she often spoke of one of her most rewarding activities was chaperoning 16 trips of students and one adult group to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and Czechoslovakia.
Mary Jane was very active in the following organizations in the Lehigh Valley in PA: Board Member of Whitehall Township Public Library, President of Lehigh Valley Health Network Hospital Auxiliary in Muhlenberg, Member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Member of the Hill Toppers New Life Group, President of Whitehall Women's Club in Whitehall, President of the Red Hatters Club, and she was a Member of Gettysburg College Choir and St. John's Lutheran Church Choir. Mary Jane was a Lutheran by faith and also enjoyed Non-Denominational services with Celebrate Seniors and Illuminate Church in Florida. MJ moved to Kissimmee in 2013 from Whitehall, Pennsylvania. She resided at Windsor at Celebration Assisted Living Facility since February of 2019.
MJ was preceded by her husband of 67 years, George A. Shumberger. She is survived by her son Kurt A. Shumberger and his wife Linda; grandson, Kurt Erich George Shumberger of Kissimmee Florida. She is also survived by her special friend and care-giver Sharon Carey as well as her many friends at The Windsor in Celebration Florida and "Up North."
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Windsor at Celebration, 1370 Celebration Blvd, Celebration, FL, 34747. The Memorial will be streamed via Facebook @CelebrateSeniorsFL. MJ will be laid to rest with her late husband, George A. Shumberger at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
