Frederic was the second child born from the 1824 marriage of Arthur Eden (1793-1860) and Frances 'Fanny' Buncombe-Poulett-Thomson (1792-1877), the widow of William Baring. He was born in Charles Street, Berkeley Square, City of Westminster, London, England and was baptized in the Anglican faith on 24 June 1829 at St. Mary's, Wimbledon, Greater London. He earned his B.A. degree from Merton College, Oxford University in 1850 and became a member of Lincoln's Inn Court as a barrister-at-law. In 1861, he was appointed by the United Kingdom's Home Office as a Commissioner of Fisheries. On 28 February 1865, at Bramley Church, Frederic married Caroline Jekyll, the eldest daughter of Edward Jekyll, Esquire, of Bramley House, near Guildford in Surrey.


Frederic was the author of The Nile Without a Dragoman, published in 1871 and A Garden in Venice, published in 1903.
