Companion and assistant of St. Anthony of Padua, Blessed Luke (or Lucas) Belludi joined the Franciscans at the age of 20 after hearing the preaching of St. Francis of Assisi, reportedly being received into the order by St. Francis himself. Born of a wealthy family near Padua, likely between the years 1200 and 1210, he was assigned to assist St. Anthony of Padua, helping him in his work of evangelization, and seeing him through his final illness and death. He then succeeded St. Anthony as provincial minister of the Franciscans, while working to complete the basilica where their mortal remains both now repose. He died between the years 1285 and 1286, was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1927, and his feast day is now commemorated on February 17th.
