He was born in Leith, N.D., and lived in Hillsboro, N.D., Bozeman, Mont., and Chehalis, Wash., where he entered the grocery business. He later. went to Olympia, Wash., and then to various other Washington cities to open new Piggly Wiggly stores.
Later, Mr. Sept became associated with Skagg's United stores, which became Safeway Stores. He had lived in several cities in California, including Gault, Sacramento, Chico and Roseville. Mr. Sept became manager for the Purity Store in Lodi and later operated his own store there. He was in the real estate business after moving to Santa Cruz in 1947 and he retired in 1971.
He was a member of the American Legion and Auxiliary and First Presbyterian Church and was former president of the Monday Music Club. He was an Army veteran of World War I.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Sept of Santa Cruz; two brothers, Fred Sept of Leith, N.D., and Ed Sept of Rapid City, S.D.; two sisters, Olga Sept and Athalena Dougherty, both of Missoula, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted at Irvin M. Smith and Sons' Chapel of the Four Seasons, 1050 Cayuga St., Monday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Kent Webber of the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Cruz officiating.
Private interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
