Kenneth Neil Baller Sr.

CADILLAC - Kenneth Neil Baller Sr. died peacefully at his son and daughter-in-law's home Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 71.

He was born Jan. 4, 1936 in Rogers City, Mich. to William Otto and Florence (Boyke) Baller. He married Janet Hein on Dec. 14, 1957 at Rogers City and they had five children.

Mr. Baller joined the Navy when he was 17 and during his career, traveled to places like Japan, Vatican Rome, North Africa, Netherlands and to various places in the states. He retired in 1989 at the rank of E-7, totaling four years active duty and 27 years in the Navy Reserves. Mr. Baller worked various jobs throughout his life, including at Alpena Community College from 1965 to 1975, Cadillac Mercy Hospital Director of Plant Operations from 1975 to 1989 and as a merchant marine from 1989-2001 where he sailed on the Bradley, the Cedarville, the Rogers City, the Munson and the Joe Block to name a few.

He graduated from college in 1974. Ken enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family at his cabin in Luther. He was a lifetime member of AMVETS Post No. 110, The American Legion Post No. 94 and the VFW. He is survived by four of his five children, Melissa (Baller) Murphy of Cadillac, Fred (Teresa) Baller of Manton, Matt (Sherri) Baller of Cadillac and Becky (Bill) Rice of Tustin; and 10 grandchildren, Robert and Heather Murphy, Tabitha, Thomas and Elizabeth Baller, Jennifer, Eric and Krissy Baller and Katie and Joseph Rice. Ken is also survived by his siblings, Elmer Baller, Mark (Gloria) Baller, Sandra Marshall, Bernadine (Clarence) Hincka, Bonnie (Cash) Hincka, Wanda (John) Crooks and Sharon Baller; also many nieces and nephews and in-laws.

Mr. Baller was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Janet on May 14, 2001; and their oldest son, Ken Baller on Aug. 27, 2001.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Peterson Funeral Home, Cadillac with Rev. Del Hudson officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Clam Lake Township Cemetery, Wexford County, Mich.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or Mercy Hospice. Envelopes are available at the Peterson Funeral Home, Cadillac.
