"Mrs. Henry Devine is Buried Monday -- President of Legion Auxiliary Dies After Taking Poison -- Had Been Ill Several Weeks
The funeral of Mrs. Henry Devine took place last Monday morning with short services at the residence and at the Methodist Episcopal church, Reverend T. B. Shorts officiating. Interment was at the Eveleth cemetery.
Mrs. Devine died last Thursday night after taking poison. She was 31 years of age and is survived by her husband, Henry Devine, and one daughter, Carolyn, her mother, Mrs. Grace I. Catlin of Minneapolis, and three brothers, T. B. Catlin and C. G. Catlin of Minneapolis and Austin of Detroit.
The funeral was one of the largest held in the city, the members of the American Legion Auxiliary of which organization Mrs. Devine was president, attending in a body. Pall bearers were Art Naslund, Robert E. Meyers, H. A. Robinson, H. R. McAdams, C. D. Kerr, and Ben Swarthout.
Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Catlin and Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Catlin of Minneapolis, Austin Catlin of Detroit, and Mrs. P. H. Devine of Ishpeming, mother of Mr. Devine, were here for the funeral.
Mrs. Devine had been ill for several weeks during the past summer and she had just returned from Minneapolis where she underwent two operations at St. Mary's hospital. Her relatives state that the only reason they can advance for Mrs. Devine's act, is that she was perhaps under the impression that she was afflicted with an incurable cancer.
Mrs. Devine had been active in Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star work and her death was a distinct shock to her many friends here."
