Veteran of the American Civil War. Enlisted aged 39 on September 3, 1864, at Varick. Mustered in as private with Battery E of the New York 3rd Artillery on September 3, 1864, to serve one year. He mustered out with the same battery on June 23, 1865, at Richmond, Virginia.

"Waterloo - On Monday morning last, Isaac Maltby Fairchild was found dead in his home in this village, having died of heart disease. Deceased was born in this village in 1821, was the oldest son of General and Mrs. Caleb Fairchild, and was one of the oldest and best known men of this village, having always resided here. He was a jeweler by trade and was a member of Battery E, 3rd New York Light Artillery, in the Civil War, and was a pensioner. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Robert M. Brereton of Woodstock, Oregon, Mrs. C. G. Dennison of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Irving Belles of Newark, New Jersey and Miss Helen I. Fairchild of Auburn, N. Y.; two sons, Henry L. Fairchild and Edward C. Fairchild, both of Niagara Falls, N. Y.; two sisters, Mrs. E. B. Cullen of this village and Miss Fanny Fairchild of Buffalo; and one brother, Joseph Fairchild of Buffalo. His funeral was held on Thursday afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. E. B. Cullen, Rev. R. M. Duff officiating." (Feb, 14, 1902, The Observer and Democrat of Waterloo, NY)
