Bangladeshi Politician. He served as the President of Bangladesh during two tenures: from December 6, 1990 to October 10, 1991 and October 9, 1996 to November 14, 2001. He earned both his bachelor's in economics and master's in international relations from the University of Dhaka. He entered the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1954 and worked several government positions until 1960 when he was transferred to the judicial branch. He later served in various judicial positions until January 14, 1990, when he was appointed Chief Justice of Bangladesh. Later that year, he assumed the office of president when both the president and vice president resigned. He went on to serve as president for a year before stepping down to resume his post of chief justice. He remained as chief justice until retiring in 1995. In 1996, he was elected to the post of president and served in this position until 2001, when he was forced to step down after parliamentary elections.
