Charles was born about 1791 in NC, probably in Mecklenburg Co or the area of King's Mountain. It is believed he was the younger half-brother of Jennings Hulsey. Another brother is likely Asa Hulsey Sr who was born about 1773 in NC and is last found in 1850 Walker Co GA.

Charles married Nancy Pate on 28 Feb 1813 in Jasper Co GA. By 1825 they were living in newly formed Henry Co GA where Charles was commissioned as a Justice of the Peace on 29 Jan 1825. By 1828 they had removed to Carroll Co GA and remained there until they are found on the 1850 Cherokee Co AL census. By 1860 they were living in Jefferson Co AL in the area of Warrior.

Charles name is listed in association with numerous deeds and other documents in Henry Co and Carroll Co GA. One that I find most interesting was recorded on 22 Jan 1833 in Carroll Co when he performed the marriage of a young couple, Andrew Erwin McBrayer and Nancy Ann Leathers. These 3 people could not have known that 103 years later their blood would come together with the birth of my father [creator of this memorial & bio] who was born to F D Hulsey and Nolia Waldrop. F D was a ggg-grandson of Charles. Nolia was a gg-granddaughter of Andrew & Nancy.

Calcedonia Baptist Church, 16330 County Road 31, Centre, Cherokee Co, AL celebrated 150 years of continual service at their location on 12 Oct 1997. Around that time they published a very long article giving the history of the church. It was stated the current building was the 4th and the original had been a log structure used until after the Civil War. The article reads in part, "In this section it was not until 1847 that a movement was started to constitute a church. For some time a log cabin had been built which stood on the ridge back of Will Hopper's place, which is now owned by Dock Newberry. It was used as a school for a few pupils, and for the preaching when a preacher was available. At that time there were living across the branch, on the James' place now, a family named HULSEY who had moved here from Georgia, and were members of a church from wherever they came. They were the first to begin the agitation of constituting a church, and the building of a house of worship. Accordingly, in October 1847, Calcedonia Baptist Church was constituted with seven Charter members including Charles HULSEY, Nancy HULSEY, Bartley HULSEY, Tampley HULSEY, Sallie WHITE, Nancy COTHRAN and Sarah COTHRAN."

At the time of his death, Charles and Nancy were living very near Cane Creek Baptist Church. It is believed that they are buried there, along with other family members, whose graves are marked among the many field stones. Two of their early neighbors in Jefferson Co who gave affidavits in Nancy's attempt to obtain a War of 1812 widow's pension were Robert Chappell and F J Rivers. Both men stated that they were present when Charles died, saw him die, helped to dress him and saw him buried. Robert Chappell was married to Sophia Carter in Walton Co GA in 1835. He was born abt 1817 and died on 14 Nov 1898 leaving many descendant in north Jefferson Co including William Alexander Chappell. William's marriage to Sarah Thomas on 5 Dec 1866 was performed by Needham Bart Hulsey, son of Charles & Nancy.
