ALVERTA C. CHRISTEL

Alverta Matznick Christel, age 96, daughter of the late Gustave and Hulda (Voigt) Matznick died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008.
She was born July 13, 1911, in the St. Nazianz-School Hill area. She attended Lincoln High School in Manitowoc and Valders High School. She was the last surviving member of Valders High School graduating class of 1929. She lived in Manitowoc for over 60 years, for 34 of those years on Lincoln Boulevard, and more recently at Shady Lane Nursing Home.
Alverta always kept busy, enjoyed working, painting, and loved gardening. She was especially good at assisting people who were ill or disabled and retired as a CNA from Shady Lane Nursing Home at the age of 85. She married Victor P. Christel on April 9, 1931, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clarks Mills, Wis. He preceded her in death in 1969. She also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lynn Marie Christel in 1966, and a brother, Ralph Matznick.
Survivors include her three children, Joyce, (James) Morris of Egg Harbor, and Naples, Fla., Jerold (Ellen) Christel of Eagle River, and Joan (Gerald) Carlson of Northbrook, Ill., nine grandchildren and their spouses, and 10 great grandchildren.
Private family funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial was the Rev. Dan Felton with burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
