BATES – At Centerton, Ark., October 19, 1906, Daniel D. Bates, Co. C, 18th Wisconsin.
Comrade Bates had resided in Manhattan, Kansas many years, but in August, he had moved to Arkansas in the hope that his health would be better. He leaves a widow and six children.

In light of the newspaper article, I believe that these are other men with the same name.

He married Harriett Miles in 1957 in Wisconsin and they had 8 children: Edith, George, Ira, Willis, Charles, Emma, Ida and Emer.

In the book, History of Vernon County, Wisconsin, published in 1884: Daniel D. Bates is listed as a private in Company C, 18th Regiment. This company was organized at Viroqua, in December, 1861, and was mustered into the United States service at Milwaukee Jan. 19, 1862. They were nicknamed , "Bad as Tigers" page 203
