ALL WAYNE MOURNS FOR JOSEPH HICKMAN
TEACHER, LEGISLATOR, BOOSTER FOR WAYNE WONDERLAND LAID AT REST
  BICKNELL, Aug 1. — (Special)
—Funeral services were held Monday in the Thurber ward chapel at Bicknell for Joseph Hickman, Wayne county's most prominent and progressive citizen, school head, legislator and, through his labor in securing the setting aside of portions of Wayne's wonderlands as a state park, called "King of Capitol Reef." Mr. Hickman was drowned in Fish Lake July 24 when, in company with three others he went out in a boat in an attempt to save several women whose boat they believed would be overturned by the waves. Instead the party's boat capsized.
The services in charge of Bishop George C. Brinkerhoff, were the largest ever held in the county, one quarter of the population being present. The opening prayer was by Prest. William H. Morrell of the Wayne county school board and benediction by Walter E. Hanks. Musical selections were by the high school chorus with duets by Mrs. and Mrs. F. L. Hickman; solo, Mrs. Glenn W. Steele; violin duet, Sam Chidester and Theris Nielson.
Speakers were Bishop R. A. Meeks who told of Mr. Hickman's life and work in Thurber ward.
Judge H. N. Hayes of Richfield lauded the life of service Mr. Hickman had lived. He also read a letter of condolence from Gov. George H. Dern and then a poem of appreciation he had written on the life and work of Mr. Hickman.
Prest. W. H. Callahan of Wayne stake praised Mr. Hickman's work in the state legislature, especially in getting Wayne wonderland before the people of the state. Emery King told of Mr. Hickman as a school man and called attention to the rapid growth of Wayne school district under his guidance.
Byron Hanchett of Annabella told of the recovery of Mr. Hickman's body and lauded the efforts of the people finding it. Bishop E. P. Pectol, of Torrey, told of the ideals of Mr. Hickman in education and the development of Wayne county and urged that the new high school now under construction be a monument and tribute to Mr. Hickman.
Bishop Brinkerhoff reviewed the late events in Mr. Hickman's life and begged the people to continue his work.
The grave in Bicknell cemetery was dedicated by F. C. Pectol of Teasdale. A quartet under the direction of Prof. Sam Chidester sang at the graveside.
