June Shell Mengden, 88, of Lakeway, Texas died Tuesday, April 5, 2022. She was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on September 15, 1933 to the late Dorothea Knight Shell and Judge Temple Houston Shell. She graduated from Wichita Falls High School. June earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. June was married to the late Senator Walter H. Mengden, Jr and is survived by her four children, Sister Marie Janae, Walter H. Mengden, III, Joe Temple Mengden and John Shell Mengden; 9 grandchildren, Walter IV, Michael, Jack, Madeline, Victoria, Michael, Daniel, Rachel and Gabby Mengden; great grandchildren, Evelyne Luisa Mengden and the late Miles Byron Mengden. Extended family includes her sisters in law, Pati Eckhardt and Ann Mengden and her nieces and nephews, Michael Mengden, Susan Mengden Ellis and Cathy Mengden Dohnalek.
June was a true "Yellow Rose of Texas". She was the "First Lady of Texas" for a day on September 6, 1982 during her Husband's "Governor for a Day" ceremony at the Texas State Capital. She served as both Secretary and Vice President of the Texas Senate Ladies Club. She was actively involved in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and did volunteer work for MD Anderson Hospital, the Houston Symphony and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
A funeral mass will be celebrated in Lakeway at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis Funeral Home, on Tuesday, April 12th at 11am followed by interment at the Texas State Cemetery at 2:30pm.
