James was the first son and second child of 9 of parents Thomas Stephen Harris (1743-1822), a Revolutionary War Veteran with a D.A.R. number, and his wife Phebe (Harrison) Harris (1744-1824) originally from New Jersey. James was named after his paternal grandfather James Harris (1700-1763).

James married Abigail Lambert on October 26, 1785. The marriage produced 9 children. (Info provided by Shaun Creighton)
