4525 Private James Bremner, 2nd Battalion the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, arriving at the Cape about 13 Nov 1899. Along with the 1st Highland Light Infantry, 2nd Seaforth Highlanders, and 1st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, they formed the 3rd or Highland Brigade, under Major General Wauchope, and afterwards under Major General Hector Macdonald. Initially employed in the De Aar-Naauwpoort district of the Cape Colony, they joined their brigade in time to fight at the battle of Magersfontein on 11 Dec 1899, just north of the Modder River, as part of the effort to relieve Kimberley. They were part of the advance to Bloemfontein and fought at the battle of Paardeberg (18-27 Feb 1900). Private Bremner was wounded in action on 18 Feb 1900, the first day of the battle. He died of his wounds the following day. He is also commemorated on the Black Watch Boer War memorial in Market Street, Edinburgh, Scotland (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/80146).
