Benjamin L. Lloyd was a coal miner. He would work in Schofield Utah at the Winter Quarters Mine, Pleasant Valley Coal Company. Like nearly 400 of his co workers he went to work on May 1st, 1900. Work was 1 mile into the side of the mountain. At aboout 10:30 AM #4 exploded killing most of the workers outright. The poison carbon monoxide rapidly filled the mine and the fill mine number 1 by connecting tunnels. 200 plus good men and boys died there. It was grief beyond anyones imagination. 2 little towns total populaton of about 1000 had 200 plus dead. Whole famlies were wiped out. The Hunters and Luomas lost 17 males. St Anns orphanage would be filled to breaking. It was pure horror. A few miners were sent home out of state, Mr Lloyd being one.
