REMBERT J. 'HUMPY' BROECKERT
(1915 - 2008)

Rembert J. "Humpy" Broeckert, age 92, formerly of St. Nazianz, currently residing at St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc, died on Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, 2008, at St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc.

He was born on May 22, 1915, in St. Nazianz, son of the late Edward and Clara (Gutman) Broeckert. Humpy attended St. Gregory School. On Sept. 2, 1945, he married the former Angeline Willmas at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. She preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1995. He was employed by Manitowoc Shipbuilding as a black-smith from 1936 to 1946. He worked for his dad for a couple of years in the black-smith shop in St. Nazianz. He was employed by Miller Implement of St. Nazianz as a salesman and mechanic for many years. Humpy was also the sexton at St. Gregory Cemetery from 1981 to 1991. He was the first village treasurer in St. Nazianz; was general chairman of the St. Nazianz Centennial in 1954; and was a charter member and president of the Lion's Club. Humpy also organized the St. Nazianz Fire Department in 1946 and served as fire chief for 32 years. He helped organize the county-wide Firefighters Association and also held offices in regional and state firefighters organizations. Humpy also played baseball in the Manitowoc County League and managed the St. Nazianz team.

Survivors include his children: Janet and Eugene Augustine, Manitowoc; Carol and Darrell Patterson, Green Bay; Kay and Michael Knoebel, Greeley, Colo.; John and Val Broeckert, Farmington, Minn.; his grandchildren: Greg (Terri) Augustine; Peter (Bobbie) Augustine; Erin (Matt) Loftus; Dave Augustine and special friend, Dani Cigler; Ryun (Sopanya-Saing) Patterson; Blaine (Amanda Bachman) Patterson; Giovanni (Melissa) Patterson; Raquel Patterson; Mikayla and Delaney Knoebel; Joseph and Justin Broeckert; great-grandchildren: Ana and Thomas; Jack and Daniel, and Antonio and Angelo; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Bernard and Ruth Broeckert, Roman and Eleanor Broeckert, and Edward and Mary Ellen Broeckert; and a sister: Imelda Scharenbroch.

He was preceded in death by two sisters: Sister Roman, O.S.F., and Hilaria Siepel; and two brothers: Alphonse and Arthur.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Michael Bigley, S.D.S., with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, from 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, until the time of service at 11 a.m.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
