Charles was the First Postmaster of Cushing TX. That's when you could buy a penny postcard.

Charles Silas Baines was married 3 times. He first married Harriett E Hoffman, the mother of his 1st son, Wm Joseph. Harriett died in 1868.

Charles next married Georgia Bryan with whom he had 1 daughter, Georgia died a few days later.

Charles now widowed twice, married Georgia's sister, Augusta, with whom he had 8 known children.

When Charles & Augusta married, he had been twice widowed (once by Augusta's sister). She herself was divorced from her 1st husband, James Wm Truitt. with whom she had 3 sons.

Charles sisters Nancy Sophronia Baines and Martha Julia Ann Baines, were the first women in the state of Texas to have teacher's certificates. Up until 1879, no certificate was required for "teachers".
