Olympic Champion. He was a weightlifter who competed for the United States at the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympics. In the 1956 Melbourne games he won a gold medal and in the 1960 Rome and 1964 Tokyo games he won a silver medal. In his career he held eight world records in the featherweight division and he won the United States national title eight times. He was an immigrant who became a naturalized US citizen in December 1955. He was inducted into the United States Weightlifters Hall of Fame in 1965 and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.
