Actress. On stage from childhood, she switched from dance to drama following an injury, gaining her first film role at the age of 12, in "The Arcadians" (1927) . She later became an acclaimed leading lady in British films from the early 1940s, later in the decade in several Hollywood productions. Credits include: "Kipps" (1941, dir. Carol Reed), "The Man in Grey" (1943), "Fanny by Gaslight" (1944), "Madonna of the Seven Moons" (1945/with Stewart Granger), "Appointment with Danger" (1950/with Alan Ladd), "Mandy" (1952), "Indiscreet" (1958/with Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant and Cecil Parker), "Oscar Wilde" (1960), "The Battle of the Villa Fiorita" (1965), "The Walking Stick" (1970), "Kate" (1970-72/TV Series) and "Mrs. Dalloway" (1997). Widow of actor-turned-publisher Peter Murray Hill (1908-57). She died in her sleep at a hospital from natural causes.
