Born in Birmingham, England in 1843. Came first to New Orleans in 1849 with his parents, Henry and Mary Whitford Smallwood, and siblings Henry, Joseph, and Rebecca. Ed, Joseph, and Rebecca came to Houston around 1857. Worked as a printer and newspaper owner in Houston and later Kerrville, TX where he was involved in the early city goverment and helped to establish the Masonic Lodge there. Married Amelia Gholson in 1862 and had two sons - Edward and Robert.
