JOHN GULLIVER WEST'S DEATH
A Short Sketch of His Life--He Will Be Buried by the A.O.U.W.
As announced in the Statesman yesterday, John G. West, the well-known cattle buyer, died at his home on Oak street at an early hour yesterday morning, at the age of 63 years, after an illness of seven weeks with typhoid pneumonia.
John Gulliver West was born in Somerset, England, August 22, 1892, and resided in Great Britain until 1853, when he immigrated to Canada, where he served in the militia some years.
He was married there in 1855 to Miss Sarah McGregor, who survives him. Nine children blessed their union, seven of whom are living, six sons and one daughter, as follows: L.E. West, residing at Port Townsend, Wash., Arthur and John W. of this city, Fred in Portland, Ab. E., Seattle, Oswald and Regina, at home. Mrs.T. N. McCauley of this city was an adopted daughter and lived in the family several years.
The family came to Salem in 1877 and all but the oldest son have resided here the greater portion of the time since. The boys have grown to manhood here and the only daughter is a native of Salem.
Mr. West was a man of great positiveness, push and energy, self-reliant and independent. He was an extensive stock buyer and shipper, doing a large business with United States customers while in Canada, and sending large droves to Puget sound and British Columbia customers since living in Oregon. He had a robust physical constitution as was indicated by the long tussle with disease which finally wasted away his frame and conquered. His bluff, honest nature was proverbial and made him hosts of friends who will sorrowfully miss his cheerful greeting.
Mr. West was not a church member during his later life, but for several years was a member of Valley lodge, Ancient Order of United Workmen, this city, and he will be buried Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock under the auspices of that order, in accordance with the funeral notice in another column.
