MOTHER- WEST PASSES AWAY
Death Claims Her After Long Illness in This City
Was Mother of Oswald West, Prominent in Politics of State
Sarah McGregor West, mother of Railroad Commissioner Oswald West, died at 10 o'clock last evening at 292 North Summer street in this city, asthmatic and stomach troubles were the cause.
Sarah McGregor West was born at Emmons, near Guelph, Ontario, Canada, July 11, 1832 and married to the late John G. West, at Hamilton, Ontario August 15, 1855. Along in the seventies the family left Canada for the United States and came to Portland in 1877. After remaining in Portland a few weeks the family moved to Roseburg, Oregon, remaining there a few months and then moved to Salem where she has resided ever since.
She was the mother of nine children, seven boys and two girls. Five children survive her: L. E., of Tacoma; John W. W., of Seattle; A. E., of Falls City, and Oswald and Regina West of Salem. She is also survived by five sisters and two brothers, Absolom McGregor, of Davidson, Saskatchewan; Lauchlin McGregor, of North Powder, Oregon; Mrs. Catherine Clarke, of Glndale, Or.; Mrs. Robt. Stewart, of Guelph, Canada; Mrs. James Stewart, of chicago; Mrs. Elisabeth Hammel and Mrs. Jane Campbell of Fergus,Canada. In adition to her own large family Mother West raised a number of adopted children who made their home with her, among them being Mrs. Minnie McCauley, of this city.
Since her husband's death in 1895, she has made her home with her children in Salem. She has always enjoyed good health except during last year. Asthmatic and stomach troubles caused her death.
She was a member of the Congregational church. Services will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning from the First church of that denomination in this city, the Rev. P. S. Knight officiating.
