Daughter of Roswell ELLIS by his first wife, Fannie A. MANGHAM, whom he married 14 SEP 1848 in Muscogee County, Georgia. This child appears in the 1850 census household of her parents in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, as Anna, aged four months and born in Georgia. Enumeration Day for this household was 29 OCT 1850, but information was supposed to be given as it was on Census Day, 01 JUN 1850, so not sure if this child was born about JAN 1850 or about JUN 1850.

The periodic sexton reports transcribed in Mary Jane Galer's "COLUMBUS, GA: Lists of People, 1828-1852, and Sexton's Reports to 1866" (2000) skip from the 3rd quarter of 1851 to the 1st quarter of 1852, so there are no records include for OCT, NOV, or DEC 1851. There is no report for the 4th quarter of 1853 either, so there's no record among the periodic reports for the burials of Ann J. MANGHAM or John C. MANGHAM. No record is found in NOV 1855 or 1856 for Fannie A. (MANGHAM) ELLIS, so it's possible she was initially buried in Griffin, where she died, and her remains later reinterred to Linwood Cemetery.

City 1-144 corresponds with Lot 157 of Section A in Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book (edited by Lea Dowd et al.), Volume 1. Autry reports here: Annie [sic - the inscription shows Fannie] A. ELLIS (08 MAY 1828--24 NOV 1856 [sic - 1855], wife of Roswell ELLIS and daughter of John G. [sic - C.] & Ann MANGHAM; Ann J. MANGHAM (25 FEB 1804--24 DEC 1853), aged 49 years and 10 months; John G. [sic - C.] MANGHAM, Jr. (24 JUL 1824--18 NOV 1851), aged 27 years, 3 months, and 25 days. [These transcriptions of the inscriptions are accurate, except the middle initials indicated, the given name of Fannie and her death year, the last digit of which is almost impossible to distinguish between a "5" and a "6," but we know from the newspaper that the year was 1855.] Autry also reports in this lot: "1 child marked, cannot read." That is an obelisk which has inscriptions on three sides. The markings are now nearly illegible. One side reads: ANNIE / daughter of / __ ____ / and / FANNIE ELLIS / aged [2 years?]. The side opposite that reads: LUCY / died ______ / 18[5?]2 / aged [?] ____ On a side between these two is: ANNIE & LUCY. The obelisk is pinned to the base but is able to turn, so it's not clear in what direction these respective sides originally faced; if the ANNIE side faced norther, the LUCY side face south and the ANNIE & LUCY side faced west.

Autry reports that Roswell ELLIS was born in 1822 in Putnam County, Georgia; married 14 SEP 1848 in Muscogee County, Georgia, to Frances A. MANGHAM; and [she] died in 1856 [sic -- 1855] in Griffin, Georgia. They had two children: Annie (1850--1852) [sic -- actually died in 1851] and John (1854--1878) [omits the daughter Lucy].

On a listing from a 1943 survey of Linwood Cemetery conducted by the LDS Southern States Mission, the following are among the ELLIS graves:
Annie (no dates)
Fannie (no dates given) Age 2 years [sic -- this age of 2 years goes with Annie]
Lucy (no dates given)

I believe all of the above was taken from the obelisk for Annie and Lucy, which was probably already difficult to read in 1943. The name Fannie appears on it as mother of Annie, not as one of the persons buried. . . The separate inscribed grave marker for Fannie A. (MANGHAM) ELLIS is not mentioned in the 1943 listing. It was probably already toppled and couldn't be read. It was only restored in the last few years (2022).
