Mrs. John Houdek was born in Bohemia, Austria, March 25, 1829. She died at the residence of her daughter in Cuba Kansas, of pneumonia, on January 22, 1901, at the age of 71 years 9 months and 27 days.

With her husband she came to America in June 1861, and settled in Lynn county, Iowa, where they lived until May 1869, from that place removed to Fairview township, Republic county Kansas where they lived until death came to her husband in 1896, since that time she has made her home with her children.

She was the mother of eighteen children, sixteen of whom survive her, all of whom reside in Kansas except one son in Chicago. Besides the many friends she leaves nine sons, seven daughters, sixty-eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren to mourn her loss.

A large number of her friends and relatives followed her remains to the little cemetery at Tabor where she was laid to rest by the side of her husband.
