Mary (Bates) Calahan was born on 9 Jan 1824 near Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario, Canada, the dau of Steven and Lavina (Powley) Bates. She married George Calahan (2 Nov 1817-17 Dec 1880) on 1 Jan 1842. She died on 8 Nov 1903 at Lenora, Norton, KS. At one time the family owned land on Howe's Island located in the St. Lawrence River near Kingston. They moved to York, DuPage, IL in 1848 and to Albert Lea, Freeborn, MN in 1856. The family settled in Burr Oak, Jewell, KS in 1877.
