Bert was one of thirteen children of George Calahan and Mary Bates. In 1856, when he was 8 years old, he moved with his parents to Albert Lea, MN, where he spent his boyhood. When he was 20, he bought a threshing machine. When he was 24, he went to Iowa and while there caught his leg in the machinery and was nearly killed and was left with a permanent leg injury. He left Minnesota in 1876 for Kansas where he bought some land northwest of Burr Oak, Jewell Co, KS. He married Elizabeth "Lizzy" Williams on January 13, 1878. They were the parents of nine children. After his marriage, they made their home near Burr Oak until Lizzy became ill due to measles and from a stroke, the family moved to Kanona, KS. Lizzy died Jul 16, 1901 at Kanona, Decatur, KS when she was 38 and is buried in the Kanona Cemetery. Bert then returned with his family to his old home in Burr Oak Twp. where he lived most of the rest of his life. His second wife was Sarah Margaret Lantis, the widow of Silas Miller. She is buried in the Zion Cemetery in Limestone Twp, Jewell Co, KS.In the fall of 1934 he went to Spalding, NE, to visit his son George Calahan and family. On the return trip, the car in which he was riding was involved in an accident near Wolbach, NE and Bert received a compound fracture above the knee. He died about 3 weeks later from complications in the hospital at Grand Island, NE.
