Michael was a labourer until he joined the Royal Irish Constabulary at the age of 23. He was stationed in Sneem, Listowel, Ballylongford and Tarbert.
On 21 June 1880 he married Bridget Houlihan, a dressmaker from Kilrush, Co. Clare, at St. Senan's Roman Catholic Chapel in Kilrush. Bridget was the daughter of Catherine "Kate" (Keniery) and James Houlihan, a farmer, of Co. Clare. The witnesses to the marriage were Michael Cavanagh and Delia Morrissey.
Following their marriage, Michael and Bridget lived in a number of locations - Listowel, Ballylongford and Tarbert (all in Co. Kerry) prior to retiring from the RIC in September 1893. In late 1893 the the family moved back to Bridget's home town of Kilrush, Co. Clare, where they owned and ran M. Black's Store at 23 Henry Street. Together Michael and Bridget had 12 children:

Death.
Michael Black died on 12 December 1924, three months after the death of his wife. Despite the headstone and funeral mass card recording his age as 81 years of age, he was actually 83.
His cause of death was Bronchitis, Cardiac Failure, certified.
His death was registered on 24 December 1924 by William J. Black, son, present at death, Henry Street, Kilrush.
