Nellie Jeanette Mooney Smith, 90, of Murphy, NC, formerly of Front Royal, passed away on Monday January 21, 2008.

She was born May 1, 1917 in Rectortown, VA to James Henry and Arabell Dawson Mooney. She graduated from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington in 1935 and received a full scholarship to Temple Business School in Washington, DC, where she graduated in 1936. She married Kenneth Lowell Smith on June 16, 1938. They worked together preaching, ministering, and singing in Buckland, VA, Cabin John, MD, and many nursing homes in Annandale, Fairfax, and Front Royal, VA. They assisted other ministers in starting new churches in Annandale and Manassas, VA. Nellie also worked as a secretary-bookkeeper for Dr. Jonas Miller in Washington, the Annandale Water Company and McWhorter Properties in Annandale. After Kenneth died in 1989, she continued ministering in nursing homes, she played piano for the Salvation Army, and she was involved in Primetimers and Golden Agers at First Assembly of God in Front Royal. She was very active until she broke a hip in 2006. Since that time she has lived with her daughter Pat in Murphy, NC, where she attended Mt Calvary Assembly of God. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother David, and another brother Bob who was shot down over Belgium in World War II.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Patricia Wheaton and her husband Charles of Murphy, NC and Elsie Fetzer and her husband Larry of Sterling, CO; 4 grandchildren, Renee Rittenour and her husband Jeff of Ormond Beach, FL, Charles Wheaton, Jr. and his wife Tricia of Murphy, NC, Dean Fetzer and his wife Deborah of London England, and Kim Fetzer and her husband Kevin of Fort Morgan, CO; 10 great grandchildren, Jeffrey, Johnathan, and Josuah Rittenour, Sarah, Le-Ann, Johnathan, Kaitlynnand Matthew Wheaton, Adrianna and Bradley Miller; and special "adopted son", Frank Kane of Front Royal.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Friday, January 25 at Turner - Robertshaw Funeral Home from 10 - 11 am where a funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 am. Interment will follow that service at Fairfax Memorial Park in Fairfax, VA.
