Bill Stacy Davis, 84, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2022, at Cookeville Regional Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nell Cunningham Davis; daughter, Kathy Davis Bain; grandson, Dalton Bain (Jada); granddaughter, Baylee Bain Young (Jake); great granddaughter, Blakely Kate Bain; brother, Bobby Davis (Janet); sister-in-law, Reba Davis; nephews, Phillip Graham (Melissa), Dale Clark (Cheryl); and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lou Stacy Davis; brothers, Joe Thomas Davis and John Wade Davis; and son-in-law, Bobby Bain.
Bill was born in Sparta on August 15, 1937. He attended White County High School, and in 1958 he married the love of his life, Nell. Together they built a life of family, friends, and hard work. Their only daughter, Kathy, was born in 1960 and was the apple of her daddy's eye.
After working several mill jobs, Bill worked at Thomas Industries and was later hired as a UPS driver on the first day of hiring in Tennessee. He drove a truck for 33 years. After retiring from UPS, he spent ten years running the Pro Shop at the Sparta Country Club. A second retirement didn't find him idle - he continued to repair and sell golf clubs, buy and sell golf carts, and co-manage Sparta Mini Storage.
Anyone who knows Bill can attest to his strong work ethic.
Family was Bill's greatest joy. Nell was his constant companion, and they doted on their daughter and grandchildren. They traveled many miles to watch Dalton and Baylee play ball and participate in other activities. Bill's eyes would sparkle when he talked about Kathy and the kids. Time spent with them was the time he cherished most. The icing on the cake was the birth of great granddaughter, Blakely. When she said "Papa," he was hooked for life.
Bill was an active attendee of Hampton's Crossroads Baptist Church, and he had membership at Hickory Valley Baptist Church. He believed in the power of prayer, and as he fought pancreatic cancer, he often asked his family and friends to pray for him.
Community was important to Bill, and he faithfully served on the White County School Board for twelve years. He was currently on the Caney Fork Electric Cooperative Board of Directors. In addition, he was a Warrior for life. He supported the Warrior football, baseball, softball, basketball, and golf teams.
It is no secret that Bill loved the game of golf! Literally thousands of people in the Upper Cumberland golf community have been helped by Bill Davis. He enjoyed repairing, regripping, and selling golf clubs and golf carts, but the real thrill came with a challenging and competitive round of golf with good friends and family. He played virtually every course in the Middle Tennessee area, and that was highlighted by frequent golf trips to Florida and Orange Beach. Bill set the standard of professional, Christian behavior that should be a model to every golfer.
Bill was a humble man. In Baylee's words, "he radiated pure thoughtfulness to all those around him." He never spoke an ill word, but was always a generous, genuine man. His joy came from meeting the needs of those around him. Bill was loyal to his God, his family, his friends, and his responsibilities. He loved well and lived life to the fullest.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at Hampton's Crossroads Baptist Church. Pastor Maston Jackson and Doug Benningfield will officiate.
